Maintenance Technician
Job Purpose
To perform janitorial and building maintenance of property. Ensure grounds of property are attractive, orderly, and healthy in order to provide a pleasant outdoor environment and professional presentation of the Cooperative.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance around buildings (i.e. make minor repairs; paint faded or chipped areas)
- Maintain the building HVAC equipment in order to keep climate control in the facilities functioning properly (i.e. change out filters as needed)
- Apply preventative measures to facilities to reduce risk of future problems
- Fix potential safety hazards to avoid injuries
- Build, install, and move office furniture and equipment (i.e. set up tables and chairs for meeting)
- Maintain site landscaping (lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, turf and irrigation)
- Trim trees, hedges, and shrubs, and preventing and eliminating weeds
- Operate and maintain hand tools, such as loppers, saws and shovels efficiently
- Operate and maintain lawn mower, fork lift and power tools
- Utilize insecticides, fertilizers, and chemical sprays to treat diseases
- Keep grounds free from trash, litter, and debris, and empty trash receptacles
- Prepare outdoor area for various weather conditions
- Weatherproof areas, cover outdoor furniture with tarps, tie-down unsecured items
- Upkeep sidewalks, parking lots, fences, planters, and benches
- Perform other activities as needed (i.e. run errands; assist with custodial tasks)
- Follow all safety guidelines for the operation of equipment and chemicals
- Assist with completing monthly Property Inspections, etc.
- Learn and comply with Cooperative’s safety rules, policies and procedures
- Maintain confidential information
Qualifications
- Experience in facilities maintenance (i.e. general plumbing issues, general handyman, building, groundskeeper)
- Proficient in using manual and power tools safely
- Familiar with sprinkler systems and other landscaping equipment
- Knowledge of gardening products such as fertilizers and pesticides
- Ability to operate forklift; certification preferred
- Experience in operating riding lawnmower
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Possess a valid Texas driver's license
- Insurable with the Cooperative's auto insurance carrier
- Possess good oral and written communications skills in the English language
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain a harmonious working relationship with all Cooperative employees
- Must be or become certified in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED
Working Conditions
- Work outside under various weather conditions
- To ensure all employees are provided with drug-free and alcohol-free working conditions, pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable cause and random drug and alcohol tests are conducted on all employees
Physical Requirements
- Required to pass a physical examination when employed
- Must have sufficient health to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the job
- Requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and carrying of weights
- Sitting/standing/walking for extended period of time
- Traveling to other area offices, as needed

Rio Grande Electric Cooperative, Inc. (RGEC) was organized in 1945 to enhance the quality of life for rural residents by providing electric service where none existed. Today, at over 35,000 square miles, RGEC has the largest service territory of any electric cooperative in the contiguous United States, serving 18 counties in Texas, and two counties in New Mexico.
